Kolb demonstrates its know-how
in the field of shelf-ready packaging
With the establishment of a competence team for shelf-ready packaging, HANS KOLB Wellpappe has responded to recent demands of the market. The team focuses on the development of shelf tray and display solutions that meet the requirements of modern retailers.
For this purpose, HANS KOLB Wellpappe has bundled its know-how and experiences in the field of secondary packaging for logistics and trade in the competence team for shelf-ready packaging (SRP). "The SRP competence team will enable us to further strengthen our leading position as a retail packaging provider," explains Dr. Bernhard Ruffing, Managing Director of KOLB. "The times when secondary packaging was simply intended to protect the goods during transportation have long gone. Today, it is an important tool for greater efficiency and enhanced production placement on the shelf." Dr. Bernhard Ruffing is of the opinion that there is a great accumulated demand in the German market for this type of packaging. "Transport packaging material is more and more used to present the products on the shelf. Facing is an important element in the context of brand differentiation. In many cases, it is however not possible to use the secondary packaging for that purpose. Good shelf-ready packaging must be quick and easy to open by retail staff. It must emphasise the unique selling propositions of a product in comparison with its competitors," explains Dr. Bernhard Ruffing. In addition, not all companies pay sufficient attention to the need for an intuitive and uniform opening mechanism for shelf-ready boxes.
As part of the development process for new packaging solutions, the company has the capability to try and test a range of packaging options and versions in a virtual system. This approach does away with costly sample boxes. The designers thereby even simulate register offsets or different surface finishes. With KOLB FarbVision, they can produce true-colour prototypes. Walter A. Böttcher, development and sales manager of KOLB explains: "Virtual 3D prototyping greatly speeds up the decision-making process. We can for example test and evaluate different options to find out how boxes can best be opened and placed. Shelf-ready packaging must at all times look neat and tidy, and it must be possible to remove products with ease."
The SRP team also decides on the printing of the packaging. Resolutions up to 54 screens can be produced in-house on a modern eight-colour flexo preprint unit. For this purpose, paper webs of up to 2.45 metres in width are processed with an advance of two metres per round on a cylinder printing press. With the belt printing technique, the advance per round is increased to 4.5 metres. KOLB also offers flexo direct printing for trays designed for a wide range of applications.
The SRP team benefits from KOLB's long tradition as a display manufacturer. "Retail packs and displays must be tailor-made to suit the brands. The same approach also applies to well-designed shelf-ready packaging. In addition, we offer our customers tailor-made bundles of shelf-ready packaging and displays made in the same high KOLB quality," explains Walter A. Böttcher. KOLB specialises in combined display and tray solutions where the trays are reusable. "Our customers like these combinations, as they consist of only a limited number of parts and allow for easy refilling."
Thanks to the extensive experience of KOLB as a provider of shelf-ready packaging, the company with headquarters in Memmingen can respond rapidly to the growing demand for special SRP products. At the Fachpack trade exhibition in Nuremberg, the development team headed by Georg Lübeck will present a comprehensive tour through the world of SRP. "For us, SRPs are nothing new," explains Georg Lübeck, "as we have been offering ready-made tray and display solutions for many years, catering for easy and simplified handling of retail packaging. Whether you opt for tear-away lids, tear strips or even certified shelf-ready packaging for hazardous goods - our development specialists will come up with creative solutions that meet the SRP guidelines," he emphasises. "Due to growing demand, we have now established a team of highly qualified specialists, offering our customers innovative tailor-made solutions."
