Aiming high in both colour printing & when it comes to making an impression HANS KOLB Wellpappe expands its KOLB HighQualityPrint range
HANS KOLB Wellpappe’s motto ‘Aiming high in both colour printing & when it comes to making an impression’ is an adept description of its offset-printed, high-precision packaging printing product range- KOLB HighQualityPrint. KOLB has now even further expanded this excellent range of KOLB HighQualityPrint packaging printing solutions, which includes the COR-1-Plus KOLB PrePrint Print and versatile KOLB PostPrint, with the new KOLB OffsetPrint.
“Our COR-1-Plus Flexo PrePrint products have now been securing our position as a market leader in the packaging printing industry for years. However, our PostPrint products are also very highly regarded, and consistently expanding our products in this range was therefore just the next logical step,” is how KOLB’s Managing Director Dr. Bernhard Ruffing, explained KOLB’s strategic modification of its printing segment. In order to be able to produce its high-precision packaging even more efficiently, KOLB recently installed a latest-generation Stock laminating machine at its Haiterbacher plant. This investment is complemented by a Bobst Mastercut Autoplaten die-cutter with power register. This new die-cutter scans special print marks on the cardboard substrates using image recording cells and then perfectly aligns each individual corrugated cardboard sheet to the millimetre in front of the die cutter.
“Ultimately, the procedure used to print packaging is less important than making sure that the print matches the colour, printing format and volume requirements of a particular packaging,” explained Dr. Ruffing. This is also why, thanks to the new possibilities of offsetting prints, KOLB use a combination of procedures in the production of the its packaging solutions.
Yoghurt trays designed for stacking, for example, are first printed using KOLB PrePrint because of the high print runs, and finished off with KOLB OffsetPrint, which is used to print the fine and high-quality packaging inserts used for differentiating between products.
The award-winning KOLB PrePrint COR-1-Plus printing system already enabled the Memmingen-based family-owned company to produce extremely high-quality packaging prints and is now providing further benefits in the form of synergies with existing and new customers. KOLB FarVison, on the other hand, has always enabled KOLB to achieve extremely flexible, cost-efficient and, in particular, fast workflows. The division is responsible for making sure that all print designs are implemented to perfection in relation to the type of corrugated cardboard and printing method used. To do so, the finished product is simulated at a very early stage in its development using three-dimensional computer animation. This is also done in reference to the types of corrugated cardboard that will be used for the final product and makes it easy to identify whether a given type of substrate will impact on the quality of the packaging’s printing before producing any prototypes, and whether it will need to be changed. KOLB FarbVision can also, for example, be used to visualise the differences in the finished product depending on whether it is printed using KOLB PostPrint, Offset- or Flexo, and makes it possible to readjust register fluctuations in advance when printing images directly onto cardboard substrates.
The fourth of KOLB HighQualityPrint’s series of printing systems is KOLB DigitalPrint. The Memmingen-based packaging specialists already drew a lot of attention to themselves in the more recent past with its design of the packaging for the popular Seeberger Tiger Duck, for which it was awarded the German Packaging Price 2008. Apart from being able to use KOLB DigitalPrint for printing just one sheet / item – i.e. for printing packaging prototypes – the other advantages of contactless UV inkjet printing are that it can also be used to precision print on smooth and corrugated surfaces. “With KOLB DigitalPrint, we are now also able to print on open corrugated cardboard, such as, for example, our C-fluted COR-3D cardboard, in a range of ways. This raises the creative potential of our KOLB Special Products yet even more,” concluded Dr. Ruffing.
