Background information History of corrugated cardboard In December 1871, the American Albert L. Jones was granted a patent for a product that is today considered the precursor of corrugated cardboard. Jones actually designed his folding machine for the production of ruffed collars. Thanks to the experimental spirit of Jones, paper was for the first time processed on a grooved roller. Three years later, Oliver Long greatly improved the technique by gluing the fluted paper to a smooth sheet. He thus produced the first sheet of corrugated cardboard.
In 1882, Long was granted the patent for double-sided corrugated cardboard.
